THE RIGHT HELP FOR THE ACTUAL PROBLEM

You have more
than one route.

Start with the organization that can address the issue in front of you. Free assistance and official resources deserve a place before paid services.

01 / ASSISTANCE

The balance is difficult to afford.

Ask the provider’s financial assistance office for the policy and application. A hospital’s program may not cover every clinician who treated you. Dollar For is a nonprofit that helps patients with hospital financial assistance applications.

Eligibility depends on the hospital’s policy. This is a public resource link, not a confirmed service placement.

02 / BILLING OR INSURANCE

The bill or insurance decision seems wrong.

Contact the provider and insurer with the specific discrepancy. CMS provides medical-bill rights guidance and help routing surprise-billing questions. Patient Advocate Foundation offers patient support programs; eligibility and availability differ by program.

03 / COLLECTIONS OR COURT

A collector or court is involved.

Check the notice and any dispute deadline. If you received court papers, seek legal help promptly and follow the response instructions. Negotiation, a complaint or an assistance application does not replace a court response.

Legal aid eligibility, capacity and scope vary. A complaint is not a court filing.

04 / BILLING ADVOCACY

You want help reviewing or negotiating a bill.

A medical billing advocate may review charges, work through insurance issues or negotiate with providers. Before hiring one, ask about the work included, fees, credentials, authorization to access records and the result if no reduction is obtained. Check whether your employer or benefits plan already includes advocacy.

Ask before you hire

What counts as savings? Are fees due on assistance or corrections? Is there a minimum charge? What happens if the provider declines? Who protects my records?

WHEN THE PROBLEM GOES BEYOND ONE MEDICAL BILL

Other debts
in the picture?

If credit cards, personal loans or other unsecured debts are also difficult to manage, it may help to understand broader debt-relief options. Medical assistance and billing corrections should still be checked first.
